Eraivan Movie Synopsis: A cop races against time to catch a psychopath, who is also responsible for the death of his loved ones.

Iraivan Movie Review:

Psycho-thriller films are quite common in Tamil cinema, and need to get rid of the old tropes found in the genre to bring in some kind of freshness. Although Jayam Ravi's Eraivaan manages to keep us right in the middle of the chaotic characters with a decent screenplay, the dark themes and absurd ideals of the antagonists do not allow us to fully grasp the world. Also, after the first half, the film becomes a bit predictable, turning into a cat-and-mouse game.

In the opening scene, we are introduced to Arjun (Jayam Ravi), a fearless cop notorious for taking justice into his own hands. Her close friend, Andrew (Narayan), who is also a cop, constantly urges her to control her temper, worried that Arjun's approach could put them both in danger. Meanwhile, Andrew enjoys a happy family life with his wife Jasmine (Vijayalakshmi), sister (Nayanthara) and daughter Sophia.

However, their seemingly idyllic life takes a sinister turn when they encounter a harrowing case — a psycho-killer named Brahma (Rahul Bose), who kidnaps and brutally murders young girls at night. As the body count rises, the police department realizes an ominous pattern of murders. Andrew and his team manage to track down and arrest the killer, but tragedy strikes.

Deeply affected, Arjuna quits the army and, together with Andrew's sister, opens a coffee shop in search of a peaceful existence. However, their tranquility is shattered when Brahma escapes from police custody, resuming his murderous spree.
Can Arjuna retrieve Brahma and bring him to justice, or are there more brutal psychopaths lurking in the shadows?

While the set-up and initial premise where we are introduced to the terrifying psycho-killer, Brahma (Rahul Bose), is great, Iraivan's writing loses its flow as the film progresses. The first half keeps us on edge, and we even start falling in love with the screenplay pattern, as Ahmed breaks some of the rules of a psycho-thriller. He forces his main characters to track down and even confront the killer within minutes. It makes us curious to know what we are going to witness for the remaining two hours.

However, when the film reaches its middle, we start losing interest. The idea of bringing in a new demon that the hero is forced to fight is all well and good, but the second half doesn't pack a punch. The author keeps throwing information at us about things we already know, which ultimately makes the events written around these events somewhat uninteresting. Also, we just wish Rahul Bose was the only psycho for the hero to fight without bringing in another new character.

Also, the director's decision to make all the damage personal to the protagonist doesn't work very well. Jayam Ravi's performance saves the film to a large extent as his screen presence brings credibility to the role and makes us empathize with the problems the character goes through. Nayanthara and Narain's characters also thus add value to the script. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music enhances certain sequences, especially the opening sequences.
Eraivan is a well-made psycho thriller with strong characters, but the motives and writing are a bit weak at certain places, making it an average watch.
